Climbing Accident On Oregon’s Three Fingered Jack Claims Life of Bend Man

On Sunday, September 20, 2015 Tyler Jeffery Heilman, 22, of Bend, Oregon fell 500 to 600 feet while climbing Three Fingered Jack in Oregon’s Mount Jefferson Wilderness. He unfortunately died as a result of his fall. RIP.

According to OregonLive.com, Heilman and his climbing partner were traveling on the popular south face of the mountain. They reached the summit at 7,841′ and on they’re descent, about 100′ from the top, Heilman fell. The two were not roped together.

Lin County received an emergency phone call at 2:10 PM on Sunday. A joint effort from local Search and Rescue and the Oregon Army National Guard found the body just before 7 PM. The body was retrieved by helicopter on Monday.

Three Fingered Jack is one of the oldest volcanoes in the Cascades. It is covered in loose rock and scree. The popular south face is climbed regularly throughout the year.
