Skier Dies After Falling 50 Meters Into Crevasse On Cerro Cortaderas In Andes Of Chile

Andes, Chile – On Sunday, October 22, 2017 Caleb Ladue, 25, died after falling 50 meters into a crevasse while skiing the south glacier on Cerro Cortaderas (5197 meters | 17050 feet) in Cajon de Maipo in the Andes of Chile.

Ladue was skiing with 5 companions (2 Chileans and 3 ‘Foreigners’) when the accident happened. According to MountainProject.com, his ski partners were able to rescue him. A French National alerted authorities and and a helicopter team was able to transport the body to the Instituto Médico Legal. The rest of the group descended on their own.

Cerro Coraderas is accessed via the Valle Las Arenas at the end of Route G-25 from San Jose de Maipo in the Santiago Metropolitan Region of Chile. Multiple Chilean news sources report that the group did not register with the Carabineros.
