The Decade Volcanoes Project includes 16 active volcanoes that are noted “as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated areas.” There are 16 Decade Volcanoes that were selected by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI). In a way, these volcanoes could be described as the most hazardous volcanoes on Earth.

The IAVCEI selected the 16 Decade Volcanoes in the 1990’s as part of the United Nations’ International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. The goal of the Decade Volcanoes project was to promote public awareness, better understand the volcanoes, and identify the dangers they present in order to reduce the severity of natural disasters.
To meet the criteria of a Decade Volcano, a volcano must exhibit:
- More than one volcanic hazard
- Recent geological activity
- Located in populated area
- Politically and physically accessible for study
- Local support for the work
