Avalanche Kills 3 Mountaineers & 1 Guide On Nevado Mateo in Ancash, Peru

Ancash, Peru – On Sunday, January 6, 2019 three Spanish mountaineers and one Peruvian guide were killed in an avalanche while descending 5150-meter Nevado Mateo in the Cordillera Blanca in Huascaran National Park near Carhuaz in the Ancash region of Peru.

The group consisted of four mountaineers from Spain and one Peruvian Guide.  They had already summited and were about 100 meters from the summit when they were caught in the avalanche. The group was roped together at the time and dragged about 200 meters.

One of the Spanish climbers managed to survive the avalanche. The survivor alerted authorities. Rescuers responded and located the four victims on Sunday night. They were taken down the mountain and on to the hospital in Carhuaz.
