Avalanche Kills Skier Near Electric Lake In Utah

Electric Lake, Utah – On January 18, 2019 a backcountry skier was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche while skiing Electric Lake Bowl near he Manti Skyline in Utah.

After the avalanche occurred, the victim’s ski partner was unable to locate his partner. He alerted authorities. The victim was located by an avalanche dog the following day. The victim was not wearing a transceiver and was buried 3 feet deep.

CAIC reports that this accident occurred on 2019/01/18. One backcountry ski tourer was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche on a NE aspect at 9400′ near Electric Lake on the Manti Skyline. They note that the skier was skiing with a partner at the time of the accident. After the duo had made on descent on a low angle northeast slope, they skied another steeper northeast slope. The 1st skier descended safely and the 2nd skier was caught and buried in a slide. They were not wearing avalanche transceivers.

ABC3.com identified the victim as 26-year-old Michael Besendorfer of Nephi, Utah.
