It’s been a long process to get the hut approved by the US Forest Service as they have had to do environmental assessments, formal analysis, and extensive reviews. After four long years, Scott Fitzwilliams signed the final decision to approve the hut in mid June. It will still take 3 to 4 more years before the Weber Hut is built and is open to the public.

The Weber Hut will be a part of an extensive hut system in Colorado managed by the Summit Huts Association and the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association.

If all goes according to plan the Weber hut will be 1400 to 2000 square feet and ideally two stories. It should sleep 14 guests. It will be constructed by the Summit Huts Association at a cost between $1 million and $2 million dollars. The hut will include indoor restrooms, multiple bedrooms, solar power, and a wood stove. Does this sound nicer than where you live?

If you’re keen to book a night in this new hut, you can book online. Most likely you’ll need to add your name to the list. Powder says that most of the huts in the area are reserved for people that win the hut lottery. If you win, the hut is only a short 3 to 3.5 miles skin from the trailhead. And there’s fantastic skiing right out the door.

Whether you’re a biker, hiker, skier, or snow shoer, if you get the chance, take advantage of Colorado’s incredible hut system. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the pristine backcountry environment while enjoying the luxuries of hut life.
