Montana State University Seeks Backcountry Skiers And Riders To Help With Avalanche Research Project
Heading into the backcountry to make some turns? The Snow and Avalanche Lab at Montana State University needs your help.

MSU is currently conducting a research project that “aims to collect GPS location information and survey responses from backcountry skiers and riders to better understand what types of terrain decision we make.” It doesn’t matter what level of experience you have or what your ability is, you can submit your ski tracks.
They want to collect crowdsourced GPS based ski tour information from anywhere in the world. It doesn’t matter where you live, how many days you are out, or what your ski tour consists of. Send in your Tracks to MSU. They want to see how people move in the backcountry and how they make decisions.
All participants will be entered to win prizes from Black Diamond.
All you have to do is sign up on MSU’s website. Then use the Ski Tracks app by Core Coders on your iOS or Android device to track your route. At the end of the day, send your route to tracks@montana.edu and complete a short survey. That’s all. It’s super helpful data that you can supply with minimal effort.
Here’s a short video about the Tracks program created by MSU:

And other short clip:
The goal of the research project is to look at the human factor involved when individuals and groups go into backcountry terrain based on avalanche risk. The results should be interesting. Hope you sign up.
