Snowboarder Faces Charges After Triggering Avalanche In Closed Area At Sugar Bowl Resort

Sugar Bowl Resort Claims That Christian Michael Mares Put Others At Risk When He Triggered An Avalanche In A Closed Area

On January 15, 2016, Christian Michael Mares triggered an avalanche while snowboarding in a closed area at Sugar Bowl Resort in California. The avalanche incident was captured on video. At the time of this post, the video had over 47,000 views on YouTube.

On January 20, 2016, Sugar Bowl released a statement saying that they had investigated the incident. They claim that Mares knowingly entered a closed run called Perco’s in an area called the East Palisades. It was “clearly marked as closed.” As a result of entering this closed, avalanche-prone terrain, “Mares put himself, his friends, ski patrol and the skiing public at risk.”

Sugar Bowl Resort has chosen to turn “this incident over to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department for prosecution under California Penal Code 602(r), which refers to trespassing into a closed area of a ski resort.”
