Army Rescues Three Students Buried In An Avalanche in Kashmir. One 15-Year-Old Student Dies In Avalanche.

Kashmir, India – At 12:30 on Saturday, January 30, 2016 an avalanche hit a forested area near a madrassa at Chontiwari Payeen in the Macchil sector in Kashmir’s Kupwara district of India. Three Darsgah students were buried in the avalanche. One of them died from his injuries.

The Army’s Avalanche Rescue Team was dispatched to find the buried students. They quickly found the boys buried 10 feet deep. Two of the student were injured and taken to the local hospital. Unfortunately, Mehrajuddin Khan, a 15 year old student died on the scene.

On January 29, avalanche warnings were issued for four different districts – including Kupwara – where this  deadly avalanche occurred. The avalanche warning was issued due to heavy snowfall and rain over the past two days.
