One Dead After Avalanche Strikes Near Indian Army Outpost At 17,500′

Two Soldiers Swept Away By Avalanche Near Line Of Control In Kashmir – One Is In Stable Condition, The Other Was Buried Under 12 Feet Of Snow

Srinagar, India – At approximately 2245 hours on Thursday, March 17, 2016 two Indian Army soldiers were swept away by an avalanche while on surveillance duty near their army post near the Line of Control at 17,500′ in the Kargil Sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rescue operations were launched immediately. One soldier was recovered and is currently in stable condition. The other soldier, Vijay Kumar K, was missing for three days. The rescue teams consisted of Army teams, rescue dogs, radar detectors, and metal detectors.

Despite sever weather conditions, on Sunday, March 20, Indian Army teams recovered the body of the missing soldier buried under 12 feet of snow.
