Bodies of Alex Lowe and David Bridges Found On Shishapangma

The Bodies Of Alex Lowe and David Bridges Were Found On Shishapangma In Tibet | They’ve Been Missing Since October 5, 1999

Shishapangma, Tibet – On April 27, 2016, Ueli Steck and David Goettler, were scouting a new route on Shishapangma (26,289′) in Tibet – the 14th highest peak in the world. During their time on the mountain they found the bodies of Alex Lowe and David Bridges encased in blue ice.

Blue Ice - Glacier

On October 5, 1999 Lowe, Bridges, and Conrad Anker were on site at Shishapangma scouting a couloir in hopes of skiing an 8000 meter peak. As they were crossing a glacier at 19,000 feet, a serac fell from over 6,000′ above their heads and caused an avalanche. Anker ran left and was partially buried, injured, and could walk. Bridges and Lowe ran downhill and right and simply vanished.

Other mountaineers on the mountain, including Andrew McLean, Mark Holbrook, Hans Saari, and Kristoffer Erickson, helped Anker conduct a multi-day search, but they never found a single sign of Bridges or Lowe.

Alex Lowe, one of the world’s greatest mountaineers,  and David Bridges, an expedition cameraman, had been missing for 16 years, 6 months, and 22 day, when Ueli Steck and David Goettler found them. He described their clothing and backpacks to Conrad Anker who confirms that they are the missing climbers.
