Deadly Avalanche On Pizzo Stella Kills Backcountry Skier In Italy

Pizzo Stella, Italy – At around noon on Thursday, May 5, 2016 two ski mountaineers were ascending Pizzo Stella (3163 m | 10377′) in the Spluga Valley in the municipality of Piuro in northern Italy when an avalanche was triggered at approximately 3100 meters.

One skier was caught, carried 700 meters, and was buried. His backcountry ski partner watched the accident happen and alerted authorities. Rescuers respond via helicopter. The man was located and recovered alive. He was transported to the hospital by air ambulance, but ultimately died of his injuries.

The avalanche victim was a 33-year-old man from Valchiavenna with the initials SG.
