Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina – On September 11, 2018 Claudia Betina Gaitan was killed in an avalanche on Cerro Alvear near Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego Province of Argentina.
The victim was climbing with a climbing companion when the incident occurred at approximately 4500 feet. Both mountaineers were caught in the slide. The partner was not buried and alerted authorities.
Rescuers located the victim who had been dragged about 100 meters. She did not survive.
