Ski Tourer Dies From Injuries Sustained In Avalanche In Oberiberg, Switzerland

Oberiberg, Switzerland – At approximately 10 am on Saturday, January 21, 2017 two ski tourers were caught in an avalanche near the Forstberg in Oberiberg in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland.

One of the ski tourers, a 52-year-old female, was able to free herself from the avalanche and alert authorities with the Rega Alarm smartphone app. Rescuers responded to the scene and were able to locate the man who was buried several meters deep.

The 53-year-old ski tourer was taken to the hospital where he remained in critical condition. On Wednesday evening he died from injuries sustained in the avalanche.

SLF.ch reports that the avalanche occurred on the Forstberg on a north aspect at 2100 meters. The avalanche danger at the time was 2 out of 5 (moderate). See a map of the avalanche location here.
