Avalanche Kills Skier In The High Tatras Of Slovakia

High Tatras, Slovakia – On Wednesday, December 6, 2017 a 30-year-old Slovakian ski tourer was killed in an avalanche on the Zbojnícky spád in the Veľkej Studena dolina (Great Cold Valley) in the High Tatras of Slovakia.

Rescuers responded to the scene and began to search for the skier. After about 2.5 hours, the victim was found under 1.5 to 2 meters of snow. According to numerous sources, the victim was not wearing the appropriate avalanche equipment.

Lawis.at reports that on 2017-12-06 at 11:15, an avalanche killed one individual at Zbojnicky spad in Slovakia. They report the lat/long as 49.1834° N / 20.1693° E. The accident occurred on a south aspect at 2040 meters on a 33 degree slope. The size 3 slab avalanche measured 480 meters long x 100 meters wide x 70 centimeters deep. Two skiers were caught, but only one was buried and killed.
