A 50-year-old Basque hiker and his female companion were caught in the avalanche. The female was able to free herself from the avalanche, but the man was buried. Other people in the area were able to assist the woman and dig the man out of the avalanche.

These rescuers helped to transport the man to a Civil Guard helicopter that transported the man to Boltana. Unfortunately the man died from his injuries en route to the hospital on board a second helicopter.

SpanishNewsToday reports that the avalanche was 150 meters long by 40 meters wide. The avalanche is likely the result of heavy snows during the past few weeks followed by warm weather.

We will try to update this post when more information becomes available.
