Solo Skier Killed In Avalanche Near Valdezcaray Ski Resort in Spain
La Rioja, Spain – On Wednesday, January 20, 2016, a skier was killed in an avalanche off piste near Valdezcaray station in La Rioja in northern Spain. The avalanche occurred near San Lorenzo Peak and the skier’s body was found on Thursday by a Guardia Civil rescue helicopter in Calamantio Canyon around 11 AM. It is believed that the avalanche may have been caused by the victim.

The avalanche victim was a 28-year-old male from Bilbao. He was reported missing by his father after going skiing with his dog in the area. His car was found at the parking area of the ski resort. His dog stayed at the spot where he was buried throughout the night – helping rescuers locate him.
Valdezcaray Station was closed at the time of the avalanche as they had not started their season yet.
