Avalanche On Siachen Glacier Kills Two Indian Soldiers While On Patrol

Siachen Glacier, Kashmir, India – At approximately 8 AM on Friday, March 25, 2016 an avalanche struck an Indian Army patrol on the Siachen Glacier in the Turtuk sector in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Two Indian soldiers were caught in this avalanche on the world’s highest battlefield.

The first soldier, Lance Havildar Bhawan Tamang, was rescued immediately and transported to the nearest medical facility. Unfortunately, he could not be revived and died from his injuries. The body of the second soldier, Rifleman Sunil Rai, was recovered on Saturday morning.

Both soldiers will be transported by air to their native homes where they will receive full military honors at their funerals.

The Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment, which is overseen by the Ministry of Defence, issued an avalanche advisory of “Medium Danger” for avalanche prone areas above 3000 meters. (DNAIndia.com) The warning started on Friday at 5PM and will remain in effect for 24 hours.

There have been multiple avalanche fatalities on the Siachen Glacier this year.
