Kootenay Pass, BC – On December 31, 2017 a backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche at 1950 meters on Cornice Ridge on Kootenay Pass near Stagleap Provincial Park in the Selkirk Mountains in southeastern British Columbia in Canada.

The accident occurred while a group of skiers were skiing in the area. One of the skiers skied over a roll onto a steeper pitch and triggered a size 2.5 avalanche. That skier was buried for 20 minutes and was located and recovered by her companions. She was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Avalanche.ca reports that the avalanche occurred at a lat/long of 49.0794 -117.064. They note that the slide occurred on an east aspect at 1950 meters. The size 2.5 slide was skier triggered and measured 125 meters wide and 70 centimeters deep.
