Avalanche Kills Hiker On Pizzo Cefalone On Gran Sasso In Italy


Gran Sasso, Italy – On Friday, December 22, 2017 a 51-year-old Polish hiker was killed in an avalanche on the 2533-meter Pizzo Cefalone on the Gran Sasso in the province of L’Aquila in Italy.

Authorities were alerted to the avalanche accident around 16:00 by the man’s companion. Rescuers responded to the scene on foot. The body of the hiker was located by a canine unit around 19:00. Quotidianolacitta.it reports that the man was not wearing an avalanche transciever.

IlGazzettino.it and WProst.pl, identified the victim as a Polish Priest named Jacek Oniszczuk, 51. Oniszczuk was the director of the Department of Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.
