After sending off their sheep, the shepherds were returning home when an avalanche and snow blocked the road. At least four men from Akhmet got out of their cars to clear the snow from the road. At this point a second avalanche on Tusheti Road struck that caught two men. The 27-year-old died and a 44-year-old man is in serious condition. One of the other shepherds alerted authorities and the avalanche victims were transported to Telavi Referral Hospital.

The road clearing on Tusheti Road has been going on for weeks, but recent additional snow had slowed the process.
