Avalanche Kills Climber In The Carpathian Mountains Of Ukraine

Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine – On January 25, 2019 a climber was killed in an avalanche on Stig Mountain in the Carpathian Mountains near Rakhiv District in the Zakapattia Region of western Ukraine.

The avalanche caught three individuals from Kiev. One person was able escape the slide. He extricated one other person. Unfortunately, the 3rd person did not survive.

The survivors stayed in a tent with the victim for the night. The next day they contacted authorities who assisted with the recovery efforts.

Lawis.at reports that this avalanche occurred on 2019-01-25 in Stih, Ukraine. They report a Lat/Long of 48.2505° N / 24.2249° E, which is a southeast slope at 1700 meters. The size 1 avalanche involved 3 people – 2 were partially buried, 1 fully buried. One person was killed. The accident occurred during the ascent. They note the avalanche hazard as considerable.
