Avalanche Kills Mountaineer In Ziarska Dolina In Tatras Mountains Of Slovakia (UPDATED)

Tatras Mountains, Slovakia – On Sunday, January 21, 2018 a 26-year-old Polish Mountaineer was killed in an avalanche in the Ziarska Dolina in the Tatras Mountains in northern Slovakia.

The accident occurred as two mountaineers were climbing toward Smutne Sedlo. The avalanche measured 300 meters by 200 meters. Both mountaineers were caught in the slide. One was partially buried up to the waist, while the other was fully buried.

The companion located the buried victim with a transceiver. The victim was buried roughly 1.5 feet deep. Rescuers responded, but were unable to save the victim.

  • Lawis.at reports that this avalanche occurred on 2018-01-21 at 13:40 at ZT Prostredný grúň – pod Nohavicou in Slovakia. They note at Lat/Long of 49.1942° N / 19.7351° E. This size 3 slab avalanche occurred on a southeast aspect at 1900 meters that measures 35 degrees. The slide measured 220 meters long by 400 meters wide by 50 centimeters deep. Two people were caught. One was fully buried and one was partially buried. One individual died. A photo of the slide is available at Lawis.at.
