Book Review: Deep Powder And Steep Rock By Chic Scott
Hans Gmoser (1932-2006) is a legend. He helped to establish the mountain adventure culture that we all enjoy. Gmoser pioneered many of the classic climbing routes and ski lines in the Canadian Rockies. He’s a mountaineer, businessman, filmmaker, and the godfather of heli-skiing.
Deep Powder And Steep Rock: The Life of Mountain Guide Hans Gmoser by Chic Scott tells the full story of Hans Gmoser from penniless immigrant to world renowned mountaineer. If you’re into skiing and mountaineering history, this biography is a must-read.
Deep Powder And Steep Rock explores Gmoser’s life based on “diaries, expedition journals, film commentaries, and personal correspondence.” Chic Scott, who knew Gmoser personally, does a wonderful job weaving together the life story of Gmoser. The book provides a glimpse into mountaineering history, while highlighting Gmoser’s expeditions, personal life, accomplishments, businesses, and mountain adventures.
Gmoser was born in Austria in 1932. He immigrated to Canada shortly after World War II and fell in love with the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia. He soon began producing fascinating films about his mountain adventures and became a successful mountain guide who was instrumental in establishing the ACMG.
But Gmoser’s true claim to fame began in April 1964 when he ran the first commercial helicopter skiing trip in the Bugaboo Mountains. Gmoser’s company, Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) was the first helicopter skiing company in Canada. It quickly grew to become one of the most successful heli-skiing operations in the world with locations throughout out Canada. If heli-skiiing intrigues you, you have Hans Gmoser to thank.
Gmoser’s skiing and climbing legacy will always be remembered and it’s excellent that his story had the chance to be told. Chic Scott is the ideal storyteller of Gmoser’s life. Deep Powder And Steep Rock: The Life of Mountain Guide Hans Gmoser gets a big thumbs up!
After reading this book, I am keen to watch Gmoser’s films, but they seem hard to find…
