Free-Solo Climber Falls And Dies On Boulder’s Flatirons
On September 27, 2015 the body of Angus Moloney, 22, was found on a hiking trail near the Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado. According to Outside Online, Moloney was free-soloing the Fifth Pinnacle above the Gregory Canyon Trail. Moloney fell and did not survive. RIP.
Authorities believe Moloney fell approximately 100 feet. He did not have a rope, harness, or helmet with him. Moloney was in Boulder visiting friends. When he did not return from climbing, authorities were notified and a search party was sent out to find him. Hikers found the body the next day.
Free soloing the low angle Flatirons is common, but certainly comes with its own risk. Most routes are low fifth class, but any time you are free soloing it’s dangerous.
Be safe. Use protection. Don’t risk your life.
