If you’re looking for an adventure ski destination, Gulmarg should be at the top of the list. Gulmarg is nestled deep in India’s Kashmir and offers adventure seeking skiers deep powder, a bit of culture, and the ski experience of a lifetime. Yes, Gulmarg is an up-and-coming ski destination with facilities that may be considered a bit behind the more modern, western resorts, but the times are a changing.

Currently, Gulmarg has a dated gondola that takes skiers and riders on a two phase ride from the base up to Kongdoori Mountain on Apharwat Peak. According to The Adventure Project, a premier guiding service in Gulmarg, “J&K State Cable Car Corporation will be replacing all 34 cabins on the second phase of the gondola with brand new cabins made by M/S Pomagalski of France.”

New gondola cabins is very exciting news for Gulmarg and for any and all skiers and riders heading to Gulmarg to ski and ride powder. New gondola cars will:

  • Boost comfort and space for backcountry skiers with gear
  • Offer more accommodating exterior racks for modern ski equipment
  • Increase uphill skier capacity
  • Provide space for six people
  • Reduce wait times
  • Allow you to ski more powder

This should make everyone’s Gulmarg ski experience more enjoyable. The new cabins should be installed by September 2015. There are also hopes to replace the cabins on the gondola’s first phase in the future. Read more about Gulmarg’s Gondola upgrades on The Adventure Project’s blog.

For those that aren’t familiar with Gulmarg, it is a small ski resort in India’s Kashmir region that operates from December to April. The resort’s soon-to-be upgraded gondola accesses an approximately 5 km accordion ridge with both inbounds skiing and endless backcountry options. Basically it’s the ideal location for lift accessed backcountry skiing.

Who wouldn’t want to ski with monkeys, ride spacious brand new gondolas, and ski deep powder in India?  Are you ready to learn more about skiing in India? The Adventure Project will offer three different 2-week guided trips to Gulmarg in 2016:
