Human Remains Discovered On Mont Blanc May Be From Air India Crash From 50 Years Ago

Bossons Glacier, Mont Blanc – On Thursday, July 27, 2017 Daniel Roche found human remains on the Bossons Glacier on the Mont Blanc massif in France. It is thought that the remains are from one of two Air India plane crashes in the area that occurred in 1950 or 1966. In those two tragic events, there were 165 fatalities.

The remains found by Roche include a hand and an upper part of a leg. It is unlikely that the remains are from the same person. Roche believes the remains are from the 1966 crash as he also found a jet engine.

Two different Air India flights crashed on Mont Blanc in a 15 year span. According to IBTimes.co.uk:

  • “On 3 November 1950, Air India Flight 245 carrying 40 passengers and eight crew on a flight from Mumbai to London via Cairo and Geneva crashed on Mont Blanc, killing everyone on board.
  • On 24 January 1966, all 117 people on Air India Flight 101 perished as the plane crashed on Mont Blanc on its way from Mumbai to London.”

The remains have been removed from the glacier so that authorities can conduct a further investigation. For photos of the remains visit 20Min.ch.

The Bossons Glacier is one of the largest glaciers on the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps of France.

Earlier in July 2017, the remains of Marcela and Francine Dumoulin were found in a shrinking glacier in the Swiss Alps near Diablerets. That couple had been missing since 1942 when they did not return from tending to their cows. Read more about that discovery here.
