Retired Teacher Des Rubens Tragically Fell 1000 Feet Into Crevasse While Climbing Finsteraarhorn In Switzerland
Finsteraarhorn | By Alps (Tom Bärfuss) [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsFinsteraarhorn, Switzerland – In early July 2016, Des Rubens, 64, tragically fell 1000 feet into a glacial crevasse on the 14,022′ Finsteraarhorn – the highest peak in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. The fall was triggered by a loose rock while Rubens was on a traverse.
Rubens climbing partners alerted authorities, but rescuers were unable to save the mountaineer. Rubens was a retired outdoor education teacher and a 30+ year member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club.
