It’s your responsibility to identify, understand, and play safely in avalanche terrain. To do this, you need to understand the North American Avalanche Danger Scale.
Avalanche terrain consists of snow covered slope greater than 30 degrees. Your risk in avalanche terrain is a function of vulnerability and exposure. The North American Avalanche Danger Scale is a tool used by avalanche forecasters to communicate the potential for avalanches to cause harm or injury travelers.

There are five danger levels that provide a starting point for your backcountry travels:
- Low – Green
- Moderate – Yellow
- Considerable – Orange
- High – Red
- Extreme – Black
