Gear Review: Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat
Weight: 68 grams
Sizing: One Size Fits Most
Summary: The Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat is an outdoor inspired trucker hat that is ideal for any and all outdoor activities. It truly excels in packability, breathability, and quick drying – all things a mountain enthusiast wants in their go-to hat.
Recently I was in the market for a new hat to wear for outdoor activities. I wanted something that was quick drying, breathable, durable, and packable. Usually I just wear a standard nylon trucker hat, but wanted to expand to something a bit more outdoor oriented so I picked up the Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat in Bandana Blue. And I love it.
The Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat is a classic trucker hat with running features like wicking, breathability, and packability. Even though I’m not a huge runner, I figured this hat would be perfect for ski touring, hiking, and peak bagging. So far so good.
The Duckbill Trucker Hat offers a full sized brim with a dark under bill to reduce glare. The brim and face are both made from Patagonia Baggies fabric and features a wicking Coolmax headband. CoolMax is a wicking performance fabric that pulls moisture away from the skin allowing for faster evaporation and temperature control. The back of the hat is traditional Trucker Hat style mesh, but the holes are a bit bigger allowing more air to escape and making me feel cooler.
At the back of the hat is an elastic buckle that provides a secure fit. Even in howling winds, I haven’t ever felt like this hat was going to blow off my head. The buckle is adjustable making the Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat a one-size-fits-most cap.
After reading reviews on the Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat, it seemed like the biggest complaint was the sizing – it’s too small for many people’s heads. I think that I have a pretty big noggin and I think the hat fits just fine on my head. It’s definitely a lower profile hat than the traditional trucker hat, but personally I think this is a good thing. When I ski tour I want to be able to wear my beanie/toque over my tucker hat to start the day. A lower profile hat makes this more comfortable. Once I cinch the hat’s elastic strap down tight, the hat fits great. But fit is a personal thing, so I understand if some people aren’t fans of the hat due to fit.
Now let’s really look at the coolest feature of the Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat – its packability. The hat is totally malleable. You can scrunch it, squash it, pack it, and all around punish this hat. And guess what? It always rebounds back into it’s original shape. While at first I thought this was magic, I realize now that it’s just awesome design by Patagonia. The hat can get shoved into the tightest corner of my pack and when I pull it out, all it take is a shake and the hat is good to go.
Based on Patagonia’s specs, the hat weighs 82 grams. On my digital postal scale, mine weighs 68 grams – about the same weight as my A Mountain Journey Trucker Hat.
I’ve also noticed that the Patagonia Duckbill Trucker Hat is relatively easy to clean when it gets gross by just washing with water. It hasn’t shown dirty sweat marks like my normal trucker hats do. I do wonder about how the nice and airy white mesh will hold up to dirt over time though. We’ll see.
Overall this sports-specific trucker hat is now my go to hat for outdoor activities. It looks good, fits with my massive Smith sunnies, and doesn’t make me look to goofy when I’m in the backcountry. The packability and quick drying sold it for me. The fact that there was zero breaking in period and everything else is just a bonus.
