Gear Review: Scarpa Ignite Trail Running Shoes
Weight: 10.2 ounces per shoe (size 42)
Summary: The Scarpa Ignite is a well designed trail shoe that is responsive, lightweight, and durable. It breathes well and dries quick for all day comfort. It can handle any trail you can find.
If you’re in the market for a trail shoe, the Scarpa Ignite is excellent choice. The grippy tread seems to stick to everything – rocks, mud, roots, gravel, scree, streams, dirt, puddles, shrubbery, even pavement. The Ignite can handle pretty much anything you can find.
The Ignite seems to be the ideal trail running shoe. It’s a nice mix of running shoe and trail shoe. It offers superb protection, while still being flexible and responsive on the trail. These high mileage machines are well designed, lightweight, durable, responsive, and will destroy any trail you can find.
Let’s take a closer look:
The Scarpa Ignite features injected EVA foam and a high-density EVA plate that aids in both shock absorption, flexibility, and protection on rough, rocky trails. The design allows for an 8.5 mm drop between the heel and forefoot that aids in cushioning. A natural flex provides protection and sure-footedness when you’re on the go.
An airmesh upper allows your feet to breathe well and dry quickly. The mesh is crisscrossed with synthetic leather webbing to create a supportive exoskeleton that keeps your foot secure in the shoe. Combine the webbing “ribcage” with a lacing system that is highly adjustable and the Ignite quickly becomes a part of you as you cruise down the trail. I like how the tongue is sewn quite high as this helps to keep out grit.
Inside the shoe, a polyester liner helps with moisture control and a standard Scarpa footbed is included, but feel free to upgrade to a footbed that keeps your alignment dialed. The shoes remain airy and stable at the same time.
On the bottom of the shoe is an aggressive “Speed Trail Sole” tread made of High Dynamic Rubber that provides grippy traction. The lugs measure in at 4.5 mm. This helps on steep ascents and avoids slipping on the downhill. Basically, it will shred through any terrain. I have noticed that sometimes clay/mud can get stuck in the tread, reducing traction in certain situations.
Scarpa claims that a size 42 shoe weighs 10.2 ounces. I wear size 44.5 (the same size as my Scarpa Crux Approach Shoes) and mine weight 11.85 ounces. They aren’t the lightest trail shoe on the market, but they make up for that in other ways.
I enjoy trail running as it’s a great way to train and explore the mountains while I patiently await the ski season. When I’m not skiing, hiking, or climbing, I choose to trail run for exercise. I’m far from a hardcore trail runner, but I have put a good number of miles in the Ignites. And so far, I can only speak positively of these shoes.
There are plenty of trail running shoes out there to choose from. I chose the Ignites because I’m a fan of Scarpa. I like their ski boots and approach shoes. Scarpa has a solid reputation and always make a high quality product. Plus, Scarpa footwear seems to fit my feet well – this is half the battle when it comes to footwear.
I’m happy with the grippy goodness of the Ignites. I’ll take them on any trail, any time. They fit snugly and performed well straight out of the box. I have heard other people say differently, which is why it’s hard to write a shoe review that applies to everyone. Everyone’s feet are different. You need to find a shoe that fits you and add a footbed that keeps your body aligned. It’s wise to try many different shoes on before you commit to one. Hopefully this review helps you find the right shoe for you. The Scarpa Ignite retails for $125. There are both a Men’s and a Women’s version of the shoe. Personally I like the blue and silver shoe with the orange and black tread. It’s more attractive than some of the trail shoe designs out there. Try on a pair of Ignites and go for a run. Oh yeah, the Scarpa Ignite is Planet Friendly. It’s good to be green. Happy trails!
