Laila Peak, Karakorum, Pakistan – On June 9, 2016 Leonardo Comelli, a 27-year-old Italian ski mountaineer from Muggia, fell and died while attempting to ski a first descent of the NorthWest face of Laila Peak in the Hushe Valley in the Karakorum Range in the Gilgit-Balistan region of Pakistan.

Comelli was part of a four person Italian expedition. The team had made their final summit push from advanced base camp at 5350 meters to the summit of Laila Peak at 6096 meters. The team decided to turn around 150 meters below the summit due to conditions and bad weather.

According to Karar Haidri of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, “during a traverse Comelli crossed his skis, lost his balance and fell circa 400 metre down steep mixed terrain.” The rest of the team, consisting of Carlo Cosi, Zeno Cecon and Enrico Mosetti were all uninjured. They managed to retrieve the body, transport it to a safer place, and alert authorities.

The Northwest Face of Laila Peak is one of Pakistan’s most beautiful mountains. The NW face of Laila Peak features a 45 degree ramp that descends 1500 meters before joining the Gondogoro Glacier. The face has been attempted multiple times, but has never been successfully skied.

The Gilgit-Balistan region of Pakiston is home to 18 of the world’s 50 highest peaks. There are hundreds of mountains that have never been skied.
