Skier Survives Full Avalanche Burial In Stevens Pass Backcountry

Skier Lucky To Be Alive After Avalanche Near Stevens Pass

On Sunday, December 6, 2015, two skiers left the Stevens Pass ski area boundaries in pursuit of some backcountry turns in an area near Corona Bowl.

The skiers dug a snowpit. When they realized how hazardous the conditions were, they tried to find the safest way down. The two skiers triggered a slide from below and one of the skiers took a 200′ ride. The buried skier was found by their partner as they were losing consciousness. This one was a close call and a very scary situation.

Jeff Ward with the Northwest Avalanche Center went to the site to investigate the full avalanche burial. Watch the NWAC’s professional observations video for more details about this incident:

It sounds like the avalanche conditions in Washington are very hazardous right now. Please use caution and be patient.
