Watch As Avalanche Researchers Trigger A Massive Avalanche In The Name Of Science
Need your daily fix of avalanche footage? Check out this powerful avalanche triggered in the name of science in Valais, Switzerland in January 2016. Impressive.
This avalanche experiment was performed by an International Research Team from the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research. It took place in the SLF’s Vallée de la Sionne avalanche test site in Valais. The researchers “collected data to assess how large-sized avalanches move, what forces they generate, and the best way to protect communities, transportation routes and infrastructure.”
The explosives were fired from helicopters and the avalanche traveled 2.5km to the valley floor. It reached 200km/h.
