Massive Snow Storm Forecast For The Andes

A massive snow storm is heading for South America. If you’re there, congratulations on making excellent life decisions. If you’re not there, follow along and get ready for a mean case of powder envy.

After browsing through a number of different snow forecasts, all indicators show that Chile and Argentina are in for a multi-meter snow storm. This one’s going to be big. Really, really big. It’s a welcome relief from the current low tide season in the Andes so far.

Based on data pulled from Snow-Forecast.com on Tuesday afternoon, the following resorts are all forecast to receive over a meter of snow at mid elevations between Tuesday, August 5 and Sunday, August 9 – with the heaviest snow predicted Thursday and Friday.

Chi-Chi-Chi-Le-Le-Le! Viva Chile!

Here’s the current snow forecast for ski resorts in Chile:

Valle Nevado – 392 cm
El Colorado – 344 cm
La Parva – 333 cm
Puma Lodge – 286 cm
Ski Arpa – 284 cm
Portillo – 249 cm
Chapa Verde – 203 cm
Nevados de Chillan – 121 cm

If you’re on the Argentine side of the Andes, you’re in luck too…

Las Lenas – 263 cm
Los Penitentes – 141 cm

It’s totally possible that the storm could back down and the resorts get less snow than predicted. That’s the nature of weather, but holy smokes the forecast is through the roof. It might be the Santa Rosa storm, aka the Baby Bird Killer Storm, but that isn’t even expected until around August 30.

Whatever you call it, batten down the hatches and get ready for the storm of a lifetime. When this thing settles down, we expect lots of photos! And it goes without saying, please be safe.
