A Snowshoer Was Killed In A Size 3 Avalanche On Tent Ridge In Alberta’s Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis Country, Canada – On Sunday, March 20, 2016 a solo snowshoer triggered an avalanche on Tent Ridge – “a popular hiking spot in Kananakskis that boasts views of Spray Lake.” (CalgaryHerald.com).

The size 3.0 avalanche was triggered near 2400 meters in the alpine and ran 800 meters. The crown was 40 centimeters to 1.5 meters deep. It stepped down to a the January 6th layer and to the ground. The victim did not have an avalanche beacon.

According to Avalanche.ca’s Kananaskis Country Avalanche Forecast issued on March 21 at 4:22 PM, “A fatal avalanche occurred on Tent Ridge on Sunday March 20, 2016. A solo snowshoer triggered a size 3.0 on a North aspect and was completely buried. The avalanche initiated near 2400m and ran for over 800m. The fracture ranged from 40 to 150cm deep and involved a wind slab that stepped down to the Jan 6th layer and to ground. The subject who was not wearing a transceiver was recovered by rescue crews on Monday morning.”
