Book Review: Tracking Gobi Grizzlies: Surviving Beyond The Back Of Beyond by Douglas Chadwick
If grizzly bears fascinate you, pick up a copy of Tracking Gobi Grizzlies by Douglas Chadwick. Chadwick is a best selling author and wildlife biologist based in Whitefish, Montana. He most certainly loves the wonderful world of wildlife – especially bears. In fact, he loves grizzlies so much that for 5 years he headed to the wildest, most remote regions of the Gobi desert in Mongolia to study the world’s rarest bear: the Gobi Grizzly.
Society didn’t even know the Gobi grizzly existed until 1943. Today there are roughly 30 Gobi grizzlies surviving in one of the most extreme environments on Earth. It’s obvious why a wildlife biologist like Chadwick is going to want to study and protect this small and threatened population of grizzlies. Plus, it sounds like an amazing adventure too.
In Tracking Gobi Grizzlies, Chadwick shines the spotlight on the life of the Gobi grizzly. He strives to raise awareness of the Gobi Bear’s status via the GobiBearProject.org. With a little help from Patagonia Books and National Geographic, Chadwick has definitely succeeded in sharing the story of the Gobi grizzly to the world. When more people know about the situation that this bear population faces, it hopefully means that there will be a greater effort to save them.
The book is extremely well written and detailed. Chadwick does an excellent job of bringing the project, the bears, the team, the environment, the country, and the adventure to life for the reader. Plus, any book where the back cover’s headline is “A Chronicle of Mongols, Ninjas, Vodka, Gold, and the World’s Rarest Bears” is kind of a must-read.
Tracking Gobi Grizzlies even has a trailer:
