Bansko, Bulgaria – On Friday, March 17, 2017 a skier was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche near Todorka Peak in the Pirin Mountains near Bansko in southwestern Bulgaria.

The 23-year-old Bulgarian skier was in a group with several other people at the time of the incident. The group had climbed the mountain to ski a chute off of the Todorka Peak area that dropped toward Vihren where skiing was prohibited.
When the victim dropped in to the chute, he triggered the avalanche and was dragged roughly 1 kilometer toward the Vihren Chalet. The group initiated a rescue.
Authorities were notified at 17:20. Mountain rescue responded with search dogs. After locating the man, they spent 40 minutes trying to resuscitate him. Unfortunately, the skier did not survive.
Struma.com identified the victim as Konstantin Rupchin-Coco – an extreme skier and ski instructor from Bankso who was the son of a mountain rescuer.
