If you live (or visit) Colorado, you’re going to want to learn more about the Colorado Trail Explorer mapping project. The goal of this project is to provide information on all of the trails and trailheads in colorful Colorado.

As part of Colorado Governor George Hickenlooper’s “Colorado The Beautiful” plan, the Colorado Trail Explorer mapping project aims to connect people to the great outdoors by providing a free interactive, online map featuring over 39,000 miles of hiking, biking, and multi-use trails.
According to the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website, “The Colorado the Beautiful vision is to ensure that within a generation, every Coloradan will live within 10 minutes of a park, trail, or vibrant green space. The Colorado Trail System (CTS) promotes and enhances the Colorado the Beautiful mission by serving as the connection between people, trails, and technology by incorporating every mile of trail into a single map.” What a cool project!
Developed by Colorado Parks And Wildlife, the Colorado Trail System’s map is called the Colorado Trail Explorer. Anyone can use the interactive, online map for free. The goal of the project is to map every single mile of trail in Colorado, so far they have mapped roughly 85% of the recreation trails.
- 5,683 mi of hiking trails
- 6,821 mi of mountain biking trails
- 24,906 mi of motorized trails and unpaved roads
- 1,746 mi of paved bike paths
The interactive map will be available on desktops and on smartphones.
The following video about COTREX – Colorado Trail Explorer posted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife will teach you more about this cool mapping project.
After learning about this, we wonder who’s going to be the first person to travel all 39,000 miles? The challenge is on!
