Oshtorankouh, Iran – On Thursday December 7, 2017 a group of mountaineers were caught in an avalanche on 4150-meter Oshtoran Kuh (اشترانکوه) in the Zagros Mountains in the Lorestan province of western Iran. At this point, 8 are dead and 1 is missing.

The mountaineers were in a group of 14 men and women from Mashhad with a local guide who set out for the peak on Wednesday. The group had summited the mountain and were en route to a shelter when they were caught in an avalanche.
Rescuers responded to the scene of the avalanche via helicopter. Sources listed below report that the search was suspended due to weather, darkness, and/or avalanche hazard.
Rescuers express little hope that the missing climbers are still alive. Isna.ir identified both the survivors and the missing climbers. So far 2 climbers have been found dead and 7 are missing.
