Montagne d’Areng, France – On Saturday, March 31, 2018 a 26-year-old mountaineer from Toulouse, France was killed in an avalanche on 2079-meter Montagne d’Areng near Ferrere in the Barousee Valley in the Hautes-Pyrenees of France.

The victim was part of a 3-person team that had climbed the Lucas Couloir (AD- 150m) on the north side of Montagne d’Areng. Upon reaching the top in poor weather, they attempted to descend, but realized they were not on the right route. While attempting to find the correct route in bad weather, two of members of the group triggered the avalanche while rappelling.
Those mountaineers were carried over rocks by the avalanche. One person was killed and one was seriously injured. The 3rd member of the group was not involved in the slide and was able to sound the alarm. Rescuers had to respond on foot due to the weather.
