Avalanche Kills Skier On Lenzspitze In Valais, Switzerland

Lenzspitze, Switzerland – On Sunday, June 10, 2018 a 23-year-old ski tourer was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche at 4100 meters while descending the Hohbalm Glacier below the 4294-meter Lenzspitze near Sass-Fee in Valais, Switzerland.

The victim and two companions had toured from the Mischabelhutte in the direction of the Lenspitze that morning. Upon their descent, an avalanche occurred that measured approximately 350 meters long by 150 meters wide.

Only the victim was caught in the slide. A rescue was initiated by the victim’s companions and other mountaineers in the area. The victim was wearing an avalanche transceiver and was recovered quickly. Unfortunately, he did not survive.

Update 6/20: Lawis.at and SLF.ch report that the avalanche occurred at 4150 meters on a NE aspect on the Lenzspitze. They report a lat/long of 46.1048° N / 7.8694° E. The size 3 slab avalanche caught, buried, and killed one person.
