Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (July 16, 1872 to June 18, 1928) was a Norwegian explorer who is well known as being the first person to reach both the North and South Poles.

Amundsen led the expedition to Antarctica in 1910-1912 that was the 1st to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911. In 1926, Amundsen led an air expedition to the North Pole. He also made the 1st traverse of Canada’s Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean in 1903-1906. He made many other expeditions during his years of exploration too. Unfortunately, Roald Amundsen was presumed dead after a plane crash on June 18, 1928 while flying a rescue mission in the Arctic. The bodies of Amundsen and the crew were never found.

Today, Roald Amunsen’s legacy lives on. In Antarctica, many landmarks bear his name: Amundsen Sea, Amundsen Glacier, Amundsen Bay, Amundsen Coast, Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and Mount Amundsen. Other bodies of water, boats, schools, railroad cars, etc are also named after him. Even a crater near the South Pole of the moon is named Amundsen.
