Avalanche Kills Skier Near Markley Hut South Of Aspen, Colorado

Aspen, Colorado – On January 21, 2019 a backcountry skier was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche near the Markley Hut in the Express Creek Drainage near Ashcroft south of Aspen, Colorado.

The victim was part of a group of 6 people. The skier’s partners extricated the victim. Mountain Rescue Aspen responded to assist with the recovery operation.

The CAIC reports that one backcountry ski tourer was caught, buried, and killed on 2019/01/21 on Green Mountain, Express Creek in Colorado. The avalanche was categorized as a SS-ASu-R3-D2.5-I and it occurred on a northeast aspect at 11200 feet. They note that the slide was 2 feet deep, 500 feet wide, and 600 feet long.
