On Saturday, November 21, 2015, Search and Rescue groups found the body of hiker Michael David Meyers buried in avalanche debris near Mount Whitney in the Inyo National Forest of California. The 25-year-old physics graduate student from UCLA is the first avalanche fatality of the 2015/2016 season.

Meyers was an experienced hiker and climber. He was on a solo mission in the Sierra Nevada and was due back on November 11. When Meyers did not return on time, search and rescue groups were contacted.

Meyers had told his roommate he was going to climb Mount Russell. On Thursday his SUV was discovered near a Mount Whitney access road. Search and rescue teams found a beanie and helmet below an avalanche path on Friday. Meyers body was found and recovered by SAR  using Recco devices on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

It is reported that a severe storm hit the Sierra Nevada around the time Meyers went missing. There was heavy snowfall, subzero temperatures, and winds well over 100 MPH in the mountains. RIP.
