Chamonix, France – On Monday, April 2, 2018 mountain guide Emmanuel Cauchy was killed in an avalanche while skiing at Pointe Alphones-Favre in the Aiguilles Rouges near Chamonix in the Haute-Savoie of France.

According to Base Avalanche’s Facebook page, the accident occurred at Pointe Alphones-Favre. Five people were caught while skiing off piste. One was killed and 4 were injured. The avalanche danger was rated 3/5.

The victim was identified as 58-year-old Emmanuel Cauchy – a mountain guide, mountain rescue professional, and author who had dedicated his life to the mountains. Cauchy was known as Doctor Vertical.
