Avalanche Kills 4 Workers On Bishkek-Osh Road In Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek-Osh, Kyrgyzstan – On Monday March 27, 2017 an avalanche hit the highway connecting Bishkek and Osh in Kyrgyzstan. The avalanche buried 3 vehicles and killed 4 employees from the Ministry of Transport.

The avalanche occurred at Kilometer Marker 255 on the Bishkek-Osh road. It had a volume of 6720 cubic meters when it hit the road. It buried a Toyota Pickup that contained the 4 victims. It also trapped 3 people in a Subaru Legacy and 3 people in a Lexus car.

Over 50 rescuers responded to the scene. They located all of the vehicles and rescued 6 people. Unfortunately, the 4 individuals in the Toyota did not survive.

The 600 km long Bishkek-Osh road is the only road linking the northern and southern regions of Kyrgyzstan. It goes through the mountains at altitudes of up to 3000 meters.
