Bucegi Mountains, Romania – On Saturday, January 13, 2018 a 30-year-old mountaineer from Bucharest was caught, buried, and killed in an avalanche in the Valea Coştilei near the Costila Refuge in the Bucegi Mountains near Busteni, Romania.

The victim was part of a five person group when the avalanche occurred. The victim was dragged approximately 500 meters. The other four individuals escaped the avalanche. Two members of the group went to notify authorities. The other two people from the group attempted a rescue, but could only find the victim’s backpack, helmet, and other equipment.
Rescuers responded to the scene and began to search for the man. Unfortunately, another avalanche and poor weather descended on the area so the rescue has been called off after five hours of searching. Rescuers believe it is impossible for the man to have survived the slide. They plan to bring in avalanche rescue dogs to complete the search.
Observator.tv identified the 30-year-old victim as Daniel Rusu.
