Mountaineer Dies In Avalanche While Climbing The Coolidge Couloir on Monte Viso In Italian Alps

Monte Viso, Italy – On May 21, 2016 Joel Dutto a 21-year-old mountaineer from Cervasca, Italy was killed in an avalanche while climbing the Coolidge Couloir on the north wall of Monte Viso in the Italian Alps.

The avalanche on Monte Viso occurred between 2700 meters and 3000 meters near the Villata Bivouac site. Eight climbers in four groups were on the route at the time, but there was only one fatality and one injury. Everyone else is accounted for. Authorities were notified and the Piedmontese Alpine Rescue Team responded via helicopter but found the victim to be dead on the scene. His body was transported to Crissolo.

Monte Viso or Monviso is the highest peak in the Cottian Alps at 3841 meters | 12602 feet. It is located near the Italy/France border in the province of Cuneo.

This is the 14th avalanche fatality in Italy during the 2015/2016 winter season.
