One Climber Killed In Avalanche on Creag Meagaidh in Scottish Highlands

Scottish Highlands – At around 3:15 on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 two climbers were caught in an avalanche on 3,710′ Creag Meagaidh on the north side of Glean Spean in the western highlands of Scotland. Creag Meagaidh is famous for steep cliffs and a popular ice climbing spot.

The avalanche was spotted by other climbers and rescue teams in the area. It is reported that rescuers heard cries for help and saw equipment on the surface. Four rescue teams responded including Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) Scotland. Also a Coast Guard helicopter was diverted from a search for two missing climbers on Ben Nevis to assist.

The avalanche victims were located and airlifted to Belford Hospital in Fort William. One climber died and the other is in serious condition. The avalanche danger at the time was ranked as considerable by the Scottish Avalanche Information Network.
